I think that about covers it. Bottom line is that I'm a liberal because I think we should take care of each other. That doesn't mean you should work 80 hours a week so your lazy neighbor can get all your money. It just means I don't believe there is any scenario in which preventable suffering is an acceptable outcome as long as money is saved.
This is a nice, feel-good declaration. Many people who do not call themselves liberal also believe that we should take care of each other. Not special or unique to liberalism. Sorry, it simply isn't.
You keep saying that those who are "rich" should help those who are "poor." What is your definition of rich? What is your definition of poor? Who decides? According to the world, everyone in America is rich.
Some people are rich because they work 80 hours a week.
You think that those who have less should be given more. What is your definition of having less? How much more?
I'm aware of drug addicts who are given an apartment to live in, food to eat, a smartphone, medical treatment, and more, courtesy of the American taxpayer, without working. How is that fair to the person who works 40+ hours a week and is struggling to afford those same things? And sometimes chooses to not have the smartphone because it's too expensive.
I also have friends who want to work, but if they do, their benefits are taken away or reduced beyond what their job would bring in. They are trapped. Stay on welfare and don't work or work and end up homeless.
"Preventable suffering...as long as money is saved" what does that even mean?
What is your definition of preventable? What is your definition of suffering? I have heard people complain of suffering because they can't afford the latest iPhone, and they are sincere. Does the person who's "suffering" decide? Does some arbitrary government employee decide?
What do you mean by as long as money is saved? This country is trillions of dollars in debt. The taxpayer-funded government programs are driving us deeper into debt, which is true of every country. I listen to people brag about how their healthcare is free in other countries. It isn't free. It's funded by high taxes and a cut in funding in other areas.
The taxpayers are not a piggy bank, though the government treats us like one. If you taxed/took/stole all the money of every single American, rich, middle class, and poor, you couldn't drag us out of debt. Adding more debt never makes anything better. It's totally illogical.
We will have to agree to disagree. However, I've noticed that many liberals have become unwilling to accept this answer; they demand everyone believe what they believe. If I don't, then I'm a bad person and hate everyone and want everyone to be miserable and die. I disagree.
One final thing: Nowhere was God mentioned, except to disparage religion. Nowhere was it mentioned that people should be responsible and held accountable for their own bad choices as well as the good. Here's the truth: Wickedness will never produce happiness in the long run. As long as we allow the murder of children before they're born, blatant violation of chastity, rampant lies, unbridled lawlessness, calling evil good and good evil, your wish list is meaningless. It's a wish list of desires without consequences. Whether you believe in God or not, when you make a choice you don't have the option of choosing which consequences you do and don't want; the consequences are part of the choice.
