Brain Dump

This was posted on a friend's social media. I politely chose not to respond. They're allowed to believe what they want. I'm not the thought police. I needed to explore each topic, to explain to myself what I believe and why:

4. I don't believe your money should be taken from you and given to people who don't want to work. I have literally never encountered anyone who believes this. Ever. I just have a massive moral problem with a society where a handful of people can possess the majority of the wealth while there are people literally starving to death, freezing to death, or dying because they can't afford to go to the doctor. Fair wages, lower housing costs, universal healthcare, affordable education, and the wealthy actually paying their share would go a long way toward alleviating this. Somehow believing that makes me a communist.

Apparently, this person is wholly unaware of generational welfare recipients. Perhaps they should broaden their horizons and work in social services for a while. I have friends who have. The above person has also ignored the interviews with people illegally crossing the border who have stated that they are coming to America because they were told in their own countries that America will take care of them, give them food, schooling, and a place to live. Homeless people interviewed in San Francisco admit that they liked not having any responsibilities.

In America, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to starve to death. Many programs are available, through the government, churches, and charities. However, there are numerous people unwilling to put forth even the most basic effort to attain what they need; they choose to buy their next hit instead of food or other necessities. Cigarettes and alcohol are purchased instead of food. I watched it happen when I worked in a store. I've seen the news of cities that have banned churches and charities from feeding the hungry. Sadly, there are also those who slip through the cracks. This is not a problem of availability but of distribution.

We have been fighting the war on poverty for centuries. A government push began several decades ago, low housing costs, food stamps, free clinics. The percentage of the poverty level has remained the same. In part, because the definition of poverty is adjusted as people do better. Poverty in America has changed. I've seen homeless people with Smart phones I can't afford.

Finland tried giving everyone a check and quickly ended it because they were going broke. Many countries that provide socialist-type programs, like healthcare, are cutting back and going more free market because the programs are not sustainable. Are we so prideful and arrogant that we are incapable of learning from the mistakes of others?

The truth is that we've made amazing strides. Is everything perfect? No and never will be in this mortal world because people aren't perfect.

I'm baffled by the complaints that "a handful of people possess the majority of wealth" and yet I hear no cries for music and movie stars and athletes to give up their wealth. I hear no demands for Bill Gates to give up his wealth. Where is the demand for the likes of Bernie Sanders, who is preaching spread the wealth, to give up his three houses and ultra luxury cars? It seems there are specific wealthy people being targeted. Who will decide who's too wealthy? A farmer with millions invested in his property that feeds millions? The billionaire corporate CEO who invests heavily in fighting cancer? Who decides the definition of too wealthy? What is a "fair" share? 50%? 70%? 100%? The top 1% already pay 90% of the taxes collected, while the bottom 50% pay nothing. What is a "fair" share of anything? Who is perfect enough to decide?

Why does anyone believe that every need of every person can be filled? The above "Wish List" sounds more like a zoo for people, where they'll be fed, housed, visited by the doctor, and every single need provided.

Believing that the state could run everything better requires turning a blind eye to things like the DMV. Isn't that proof enough that the government is inept and should be in charge of as little as possible? Believing the state should run everything, because it will have to do so in order to implement everything demanded, is communism.
