Gertrude was already a widow when she married George Read. They spent much of their married life apart as he served the country and she repeatedly need to escape the British. So much is learned from letters penned. It's amazing how much husbands told their wives of what was transpiring. They had five children. The first son died in infancy. The younger three sons survived and married as did the daughter. Gertrude was well thought of, and who of us wouldn't wish the same?
