Brain Dump

This was posted on a friend's social media. I politely chose not to respond. They're allowed to believe what they want. I'm not the thought police. I needed to explore each topic, to explain to myself what I believe and why:

10. I don't believe the government should regulate everything, but since greed is such a driving force in our country, we NEED regulations to prevent cut corners, environmental destruction, tainted food/water, unsafe materials in consumable goods or medical equipment, etc. It's not that I want the government's hands in everything -- I just don't trust people trying to make money to ensure that their products/practices/etc. are actually SAFE. Is the government devoid of shadiness? Of course not. But with those regulations in place, consumers have recourse if they're harmed and companies are liable for medical bills, environmental cleanup, etc. Just kind of seems like common sense when the alternative to government regulation is letting companies bring their bottom line into the equation.

Why are you painting the government as somehow superior to everyone else? I've been watching the news and how government entities have tainted food and water, destroyed the environment, cut corners, okayed unsafe materials, wasted money, lost billions, etc.

The same kind of people who run businesses run the government. Actually, you have a better chance with the businesses than with the government. You can point to the specific people in the company, but who are you going to point your finger at in the government? Which department? You can shut down a business or severely penalize it much more easily than you can government, unless government is protecting the business (too big to fail banks, car industry, health insurance).

You say you don't want the government's hand in everything even as you demand the government's hand in everything, "to protect the public" "for the public good." What happens when the government is in bed with the corporations? Who protects us then?

It's also problematic when government picks winners and losers, protecting some and not others because of cronyism, bribery, ideologies. And you want to give government even more power.

Why do people trust the government so much? They've repeatedly proven themselves untrustworthy, and yet people continue to run to them to make things right. Government often creates a problem so they can solve it, but how often do they actually solve problems. Too often, solving a problem doesn't serve their purpose: Make the people dependent on the government so the government can control every aspect of their lives.

Why don't more people recognize that The People are in an abusive relationship? The Government says they're here to help us, then proceed to demonstrate their true belief: The people are supposed to serve them. They beat us down: taxes they spend willy nilly; telling us to do as They say or They'll punish us; restrict what we can do and say and where we can go and how; and more. We keep going back to Them for more of the same. Government isn't going to magically change into a benevolent benefactor. It's the reason the Founding Fathers wanted it kept small.

Are there good, well-meaning people in government? Yes. Some maintain their souls, but too many discover the intoxicating lust for power.

Not all people trying to make money are out to hurt others. The Free Market is the best regulator: If people don't like a company, they stop buying from them. It pays the company to make their customers happy.
