This signer of the Declaration of Independents was originally from Wales, his grandfather. This holds new meaning for me. A few years ago, I discovered my family, on my father's side is from Wales, back several generations. How could we be sure? He uncovered an old map with a woods on the Welsh/English border with our name on it.
William was also a December baby. Small world. :-)
He was a prosperous landowner who served in a militia to defend America. His property was destroyed and his family driven from their home. The British military used it to their own ends, down to the cattle and sheep, for seven years.
While he served the public interest, he rebuilt his estate. Though he resigned from the national level, he continued to serve at the state level. Again, while he served in the government, he continued to work his own property.
When he "retired," he didn't sit back and watch his work prosper under another's hand. Instead, he bought "wilderness" property and made it productive.
Joy is found in the doing.
